Operators of Internet data centers have developed an addiction that chip and system designers can no longer readily serve: They need ever larger Ethernet switches to link traffic from ever more powerful servers, and those switches have to fit within reasonable cost, size and power budgets. A small group of technologists is looking for a way forward, but insiders say the path will likely force some disruptive technical and economic changes.
