Going Vertical in the Data Center

The trend to vertical integration got another proponent at the end of November when Infiniband chip maker Mellanox Technologies bought switch system and software developer Voltaire for $218 million. The deal instantly expands Mellanox’s nascent switch system business from about $14 million to more than $46 million. That’s a good deal on two fronts. Switches have higher profit margins than the 10 percent net return Mellanox has seen on its chips and boards despite significant revenue growth. And Voltaire could help Mellanox gain traction in its four-year effort to expand into Ethernet.
