Gearing Up for Hybrid Home Nets

Broadcom’s acquisition of Gigle Networks was the latest in a string of deals driven by a shared vision: Any content in the digital home needs to be available on any device—and no one network can deliver it. Interestingly, the $75 million deal started as a partnership to create a reference design using Broadcom's Wi-Fi and Gigle's powerline chips. “Gigle came to us with this hybrid home network idea,” said Greg Fischer, who runs Broadcom's broadband carrier business. “As we looked at their technology more closely . . . we saw no one technology could be deployed all around the world, and powerline was a missing tool in our tool kit.”
