Who Will Pay for Free Software?

Chip and systems makers are under increasing pressure to develop more-complex open-source software at an accelerating pace. The trend will drive opportunities for strategic collaborations as well as innovative products and services. The pain points are clear. Chip makers are increasingly relying on open-source software such as Android and other Linux variants that churn out upgrades almost daily. Meanwhile, the underlying chips keep adding more and different kinds of cores in each spin. That means they need a lot of new low-level code in everything from kernels to device drivers.
