Taiwan Looks to Shake Up the Cloud

Taiwan is taking a doityourself approach to cloud computing, aiming to supply systems and software directly to end users, particularly in China. The initiative marks a break from the island nation’s traditional role as a supplier to namebrand companies, placing it in competition with the likes of Dell, HewlettPackard, IBM and a handful of top software houses, including EMC and VMware. Two of Taiwan’s largest server design and manufacturing companies, Inventec and Wistron, are working with the statefunded Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) on the effort. By the end of this month, they hope to finish the first version of what they call CloudOS, an integrated opensource software offering for cloud computing.
