Government Could Foot Some of the Tab for 450 mm

Some semiconductor capital equipment executives still bristle when recalling the initial stages of the transition to 300mm wafers. Equipment suppliers poured billions of dollars into 300mm equipment development in the late 1990s, only to be left holding the bag when the dotcom bubble burst in 2000 and chip companies held off investment in 300mm tools. Now the industry is focused on a transition to 450mm wafers, and though not everyone agrees, the prevailing wisdom is that the shift is inevitable. But who will foot the bill this time around?
