If there is a way to encrypt the RF link with strong encryption, hacking can be prevented. Of course, it does comes with a continuous monitoring of data that is streamed through the link.
However, I'm not sure if it can be done. I'm no expert, but we just hope there is a way to encrypt it and protect those unmanned air vehicles from being controlled by the wrong hands.
As we know today, war is not only happening in the field. One of the biggest and widest battlefield today is cyberspace which include data control from servers and from anything that involves with signals.

technical failure above what it is now. Quite the opposite, the Dilbert manager will downgrade the support because 'there isn't a pilot to worry about', and I am afraid the de-valued ground crews will find it hard to care quite as much either.

Question: would the engineers and ground crew go about their work any differently if they knew each ground-based 'pilot' would be fatally electrocuted if the unmanned craft crashed badly?
That is the risk level at which we operate today, although to be realistic we should actually include a random number of casualties as collateral damage.
I predict that removing the pilot has the true, measurable, psychological effect of partially relieving the operational staff of a sense of responsibility, despite the fact that the risk level has actually increased.
Furthermore, perhaps even in the police example quoted, as UAVs become ostensibly easier to fly, their application will inevitably widen which means deployment by ever less experienced and trained operators.
Semi-autonomous flight support firmware already makes piloted flight safer by encapsulating millions of pilot-hours of experience, helping detect those 'edge cases' that pilot don't like to talk about much, like tiredness, inexperience and type unfamiliarity, and also anticipating those specific manoevres from which there would be no recovery.

The special attribute that a pilot brings to an aircraft is intelligence to solve unexpected problems. With luck (and some hard engineering effort), drone software may be written to avoid obstacles, land as fuel becomes depleted, and address the expected problems. What about the unexpected problems? When a blackout wipes out the controller and the ground based information or a malfunctioning transmitter jams the signals? How do they react to a flock of 10,000 starlings flying by to their evening roost? "Thinking out of the box" isn't yet an attribute attributed to software systems. And of course, if all the drones move into the same safety holding pattern, they must avoid hitting each other.

Actually DrQuine, your last challenge, formation flying, is something drones (UAVs) might do well, because of the ability to share intelligence across the 'flock', they actually could pretty easily keep station without colliding.
But your main point is genuine, pilots are not there to fly from A to B and keep their craft straight and steady, or even to execute routine takeoffs and landings. That can be done by robotics today. The pilot is there to handle whatever the gods decide might be amusing, whether delivered through weather phenomena or human error.

Servicing errors are bad enough today, because crews don't know their pilots face-to-face, and it is that personal factor which is the essential difference needed to keep support crews right at the top of their game, every single launch.

About the connection of ground crew with the pilot, I agree and the Blue Angels seem to agree. The ground crew is represented by having the crew chief's name painted alongside the aviator's under the canopy on each of the BA planes.
Even having a "pilot" in the cockpit doesn't prevent cops in cars from having wrecks with other uninvolved cars. Why should we expect part-time police UAV pilots and similar situational pilots be experts? How about UAV pilot certification from something other than the manufacturer of the UAV?
