Apple is an exceptional company. I don't think you would find the same results in very many other companies. I did notice that the name Bas Ordirg shows up twice in the first chart. Unless they have two employees with that name, his total would be at the top of the chart.

Patents have been serving at least 2 purposes. First of all, it protects the original invention of a valuable technological design including assemble process. It promotes technology advancement, serving the original purpose of patent law. The 2nd purpose that has been widely applied is to protect the industry design - look and feel - of a product. It protects the "asset" of a company. I have seen a lot more of these patents these days.

I can see value of patent applications in both purposes. Yet, sometimes, I feel the protection of industry design and man-machine interface is actually hurting the advancement. Any comments are welcomed. ;)
