This article is much appreciated, highlighting the scale of social media investment in hardware - I previously thought FB et al would be fully virtualized, using rented capacity at will.

Building their own data centers illustrates a commitment to performance that should create a barrier to entry for incoming rivals, unless the new kids have software that maps better to general-purpose queried storage structures.
